Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-09-18

This Privacy Policy explains what personal data OOWN collects when you use the OOWN language-learning service at oown.app, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.

Who we are

OOWN is a language-learning service operated by Skurskaya Marina, a sole trader (ФОП) registered in Ukraine. We are the controller of the personal data described in this policy. For anything related to it, including a request for our postal address, contact us at info@oown.app.

What data we collect

We collect the following categories of data:

  • Account data: your email address and, if you sign up with a password, a cryptographic hash of that password. We never store your password itself.

  • Sign-in data from Google: if you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your Google account identifier, email address, whether that email is verified, your name and your profile picture URL. We do not receive your Google password, and we do not request access to your Gmail, Drive, Calendar or any other Google service.

  • Learning data: the words and phrases you save, your dashboards, your study progress, the pronunciation scores we calculate for you, the videos you save and how far through them you are, and any notes you write.

  • Voice recordings: when you use pronunciation practice, we record the audio you submit so we can score it and play it back to you.

  • Technical data: your IP address, browser type and the pages you visit, recorded in server logs for security and troubleshooting.

How we use your data

  • To create and maintain your account and sign you in.

  • To provide the learning features you ask for: saving words, generating audio, scoring your pronunciation and tracking progress.

  • To keep the service secure, diagnose faults and prevent abuse.

  • To answer you when you contact support.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your voice recordings or learning data to train machine-learning models for third parties.

Legal bases for processing

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your data on these legal bases: performance of our contract with you (providing the service you signed up for), your consent (for example, when you submit a voice recording), and our legitimate interests (keeping the service secure and working).

Signing in with Google

Signing in with Google is optional; you can always use an email and password instead. When you use it, we request only the basic identity scopes (openid, email, profile). We use the data we receive solely to identify you, create or match your OOWN account, and show your name and picture inside the app.

You can disconnect OOWN from your Google account at any time at https://myaccount.google.com/permissions. Doing so does not delete your OOWN account; to delete that, see "Your rights" below.

Videos and YouTube

The video features of OOWN use YouTube API Services. By using them you also agree to the YouTube Terms of Service at https://www.youtube.com/t/terms. Google’s Privacy Policy, which governs how Google handles the data it collects through those services, is available at https://policies.google.com/privacy. You can review and revoke application access to your Google account at any time at https://security.google.com/settings/security/permissions.

Videos are played by YouTube’s own embedded player. We do not copy, store or serve the video or audio files ourselves, and we do not store captions or transcripts of them. What we keep is descriptive information about a video, such as its identifier, title, channel, duration, description, category, language, licence, publication date, view count, and the address of its thumbnail image, which we link to rather than copy. We refresh that stored information at least every 30 days, as the YouTube Terms require.

Separately, we store what you do with videos: which ones you save, where you keep them in your library, how far through one you are, and any notes you write about them, together with information we derive from those notes — the words they contain and an estimated difficulty. Your notes are your own writing, not material taken from YouTube.

Contributing to our shared dictionary

When you save a word, the translation and transcription you typed, and the examples you keep with it, may be added to the shared dictionary and example base that serves all learners. Your own reading texts are never used this way — only material we wrote ourselves is reused for shared purposes.

What travels is the language material itself. The message that carries it holds no identifier of you at all, and the shared entry records only the class its content came from — typed by a learner, produced by our translation pipeline, or generated by a model — never who wrote it. We therefore cannot trace a shared entry back to you. What we cannot promise is that words you typed yourself could never identify you, so please do not put personal details into a translation or an example.

Sharing with other people

You can share a video, a text or a podcast with someone else. When you do, we create an invitation link containing a token. The person who opens that link sees the first name from your profile, so they know who shared it with them. If they accept the invitation, a copy of the material is added to their library, and we keep a reference to the original it was copied from.

Voice recordings

Voice recordings you submit for pronunciation practice are stored in encrypted object storage in the European Union and are deleted automatically 90 days after they are uploaded. The pronunciation scores derived from them are kept with your learning history until you delete your account. We also listen to a small number of recordings ourselves, to check and improve how accurately the service scores pronunciation; when we do, we work from the audio alone, without the account details of the person who recorded it. Audio that we generate — the spoken form of a word, or the audio of a dialogue or a podcast — is synthesised speech, not a recording of you; some of it is temporary and is deleted automatically within a day. The rest is deleted when you delete the word it belongs to, the dashboard it sits in, or your account.

Who we share data with

We share data only with service providers who process it on our behalf, under contract, and only as far as they need to:

  • Amazon Web Services — object storage and website hosting (Frankfurt, EU).

  • Hetzner Online GmbH — the servers running our application and databases (Germany and Finland, EU).

  • Google LLC — speech synthesis and YouTube data for video features.

  • Cartesia, Inc. — speech synthesis for word pronunciation.

  • Zoho Corporation — the mailbox that receives your support emails (EU data centre).

We may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect our rights and the safety of our users.

Where your data is stored

Your data is stored on servers in the European Union. Some of our providers are based outside the EU; where that leads to a transfer of personal data out of the EEA, it is covered by the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long we keep it

  • Account and learning data: until you delete your account.

  • Voice recordings: 90 days from upload, then deleted automatically.

  • Server logs: up to 30 days.

When you delete your account, we delete your personal data and your learning history, including any connected sign-in accounts. Backups are overwritten on their own schedule and are fully cycled within 90 days.

Your rights

You can ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or hand it to another provider. Write to info@oown.app and we will answer within 30 days. If you are in the EEA or the UK and you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to your local data protection authority.

Cookies

We use cookies and similar browser storage only to keep you signed in and to remember your interface language. We do not use advertising cookies and we do not track you across other websites.

Children

OOWN is not directed at children under 16. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact info@oown.app and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we will tell you by email or in the app before they take effect.
